Frequently Asked Questions
Device accuracy is ±0.2ºF or ±0.1ºC for all Medical Indicators products.
Tempa•DOT™, NexTemp®, and TraxIt® are all manufactured entirely in New Jersey, USA under quality system ISO 13485:2003 and audited annually by BSI. As part of the quality system, in-process and final product verification is performed to ensure that the thermometers meet all accuracy, physical, and functional specifications.
Precision Fluke & Hart Scientific water baths are used to verify the firing points of the thermometers. These devices control the water temperature to 1/100th of a degree Fahrenheit (1/138th of a degree Celsius).
As with all medical instruments, it is important to closely follow the instructions included in the package to achieve best results. Critical factors that affect readings include proper placement in the mouth or axilla and keeping the thermometer in place for the prescribed period of time.
Tempa•DOT™ and NexTemp® thermometers can be used in multiple sites to gain accurate temperature readings. Oral Axillary Rectal, with sheath.
Oral Temperatures: Place thermometer into patient’s mouth under the tongue as far back as possible on either side adjacent to the molar. Generally, adult lips should touch the Tempa•DOT™ or NexTemp® logo. The dots can face either up or down. Have the patient press tongue down on thermometer while keeping the mouth closed. Leave in place for 1 minute.
Axillary Temperatures: Place thermometer high in the armpit with the dot matrix against the torso and parallel to the length of the body. Use the patient’s arm to hold the thermometer in place. Leave in place for 3 minutes.
Rectal Temperatures: Inspect the sheath and only use if not damaged or malformed. Insert the thermometer into sheath dot end first so the dots are visible through the smooth side of the sheath. Lubricate the sheath exterior, and insert the thermometer into rectum until the dots and numbers are completely covered. Leave in for 3 minutes.
CAUTION: Any object inserted into the rectum could cause perforation. DO NOT USE FORCE. Discard sheath and thermometer after use.

Oral Temperatures: 1 Minute

Rectal Temperatures: 3 Minutes
For Tempa•DOT™, remove thermometer and wait approximately 10 seconds for temperature to “lock in” permanently. Read and record temperature. Discard thermometer.
For NexTemp®, remove thermometer and read temperature immediately. The thermometer will reset automatically after 20 seconds (1 minute for Ultra). If intending to reuse, clean with alcohol wipe or warm, soapy water. If only intended for single use, discard thermometer.
One of the most common complaints that Medical Indicators receives about our Tempa•DOT™ products is that customers receive thermometers that are already fired, i.e., with blue dots on them.
Many customers are not aware that located within our Directions for Use are instructions on how to reset thermometers with blue dots.
According to Quality Control, “When exposed to temperatures >95°F dots will turn blue. If this occurs place in freezer for at least one hour per box or 16 hours per case. Let stand at room temperature for one day. Dots may appear off-color, but this does not affect the accuracy of the thermometers.”
Resetting was done as described above in a standard household freezer which was set at the normal temperature setting. This setting was measured with a calibrated thermometer to be a temperature of 0°F.
After resetting, the thermometers were inspected and tested by Quality Control and were found to meet all of the necessary requirements for the standard final release for our product(s).
Unlike Tempa•DOT™, NexTemp® thermometers will automatically reset if they are exposed to >95°F.
No, none of Medical Indicators products (NexTemp, Tempa•DOT, or TraxIt) require refrigeration. In the event of a hot outdoor temperatures, samples or orders may be shipped in a cooler with a gel pack to prevent the thermometers from firing in transit.
